8-21-2017 Long Beach Firefighters battled an intense Third Alarm Blaze that roared through a section of storage units on the 2000 block of West Wardlow Road in Long Beach, California. The fire at “Extra Space Storage” reportedly damaged or destroyed approximately 100 units in the storage complex. After opening up Firefighters immediately went to master streams, knocking down heavy fire conditions with handlines, portable monitors and ladder pipes. Firefighters also went to work protecting exposures, other adjacent rows of storage units on either side. Small explosions could be heard as flames tore through the separate storage lockers. A large plume of smoke and flames could be seen from the southbound lanes of the 405 (San Diego) freeway as the storage complex sits right next to roadway. The main bulk of fire was knocked down in over three hours time. Los Angles County Fire Department also had units assisting on scene. One Firefighter suffered a shoulder injury and was transported to a local area hospital. Damage was extensive and the total loss is being tabulated. Overhaul lasted throughout the morning. Long Beach Police assisted with traffic and crowd control. The cause of the stubborn late night blaze is under investigation. firelensman
