Lancaster City firefighters were dispatched this afternoon around 4:50PM to a reported house fire on South Shippen Street on the east side of the city. The initial address was on the other side of the city from the actual fire location, and sharp Lancaster County Communications operators gave responding companies the cell phone callers location as being on the 500 block of South Prince Street. Companies redirected to the new address and found an attached rowhome with heavy black smoke pouring from the front and rear of the structures. As the first due engine stretched a line, Lancaster police officers made sure the exposures were clear. While waiting for water, the first floor erupted in flames and crews went right in and knocked out the fire as additional companies stretched back-up lines and the truck company searched the building. Initial reports were that there may have been trapped occupants, a complete search found none. The fire was held to the home of origin. Lancaster Bureau of Fire has a well earned reputation as a fast department that stretches quickly and aggressively.
