BURNED IN B’KLYN: A building lies gutted, while a worker examines burned cables nearby.
November 27, 2006 — A raging blaze – that broke out minutes after two Con Ed manhole covers blew up outside – destroyed a Brooklyn building yesterday.
Fire officials said the 11:30 a.m. blaze at 1311 Bushwick Ave. gutted the three-story walkup – but no one was injured.
The fire started in the basement of the building and within 45 minutes the entire structure was in flames, residents said.
“Twenty minutes later [after an initial explosion], I saw smoke pouring out of my basement, so I got everybody out,” said Gilbert Ernest, 53, a plumber. “My clothes, my money and my stereo all burned up.”
